Gardening is a popular pastime among many age-groups and it is a relaxing and pleasant hobby to pick up, as many are also finding. Gardening after an injury or when someone is facing a disability can bring happiness and relaxation, especially if it is a pastime that had been enjoyed before. If the injury is one someone is in the process of recovering from, gardening and continuing the hobby can help the healing process.
If someone is restricted in either movement or to a certain area of their home (a bedroom or living room for instance) having smaller plants around and some help tending to them may be able to help. Small potted flowers, or even some smaller foods can be grown indoors and can brighten someone’s day. Buying a gardener some pretty potted plants, or even the items to grow something small can help them continue their hobby on a limited basis while they are recovering.
For someone who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, or another problem having those small things from a happier time may help them as well. Try to find something that is easy to grow and care for (there are many varieties of flowers and other plants out there that are fairly hardy). Talking to a local gardening center may be able to help to point you in the right direction. Another option, especially if your loved one had been fond of growing a certain type of flower or plant may be to find a way to help them grow it indoors, or another easily accessible area.
