Flax Seeds: Rich in Omega-3

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, or many proven methods for fully reducing your risk, it isn’t a reason to give up hope. There are some preventative measures that are showing potential, but there needs to be more research done into the measures.

According to Debra Cherry, of the California Southland Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association:

“There is an emerging body of evidence on what you can do to reduce your risk, It’s not at the levels of research from randomized, controlled trials, but it suggests things are moving in the right direction. We are learning how to reduce risk.”

The statistics are frightening; 1 in 8 of those 55 and older, 1 in 8 will develop Alzheimer’s, and 1 in 6 will develop some form of dementia.  It is crucial to find a way to help them, and researching are making advancements into finding preventative measures.

From diet and exercise, to tea and even alcohol- there is a large scientific community looking into many different things that may push to help in preventing Alzheimer’s.There are some studies that are showing a lot of promise, among them healthy habits are seeming to be a primary  part of the solution.

Among the findings that scientists are looking more into are possible ways to help prevent, or minimize the disease.  One of the methods showing the most positive results is physical activity.  In a long term study, those who engaged in moderate physical activity were 40% less likely to go on to develop Alzheimer’s.  Keeping active is part of an otherwise healthy lifestyle, and it may be able to lessen chances at developing the disease.

Among the other tests being presently conducted are ones looking into the effect of one’s diet, and so far there is a suggestion that diets rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and low in saturated fat may be able to help prevent Alzheimer’s.  Omega-3 has been known for it’s brain boosting effects, and it is also used in those with mental disorders.  While our bodies don’t product Omega-3 which can make it hard to get enough, you can get it from fish, flax seed, or a supplement.
