Exercise May Improve Quality of Life

Being sure to eat right and exercising has been long known to be among the best things one can do for their health.  New research shows that this is even more true than previously thought for senior citizens.  Studies are showing that a proper exercise routine can dramatically improve both health and overall emotional states in the elderly.  While exercise is generally safe for anyone, even those over 65, you may want to consult with someone knowledgeable about your health concerns first.

The main key of exercising properly is to start slow.  Try smaller and lighter weights, or simple stretches to begin with and work up from there. Starting with anything to heavy and difficult can put too much wear and tear on your body.  Wearing loose and comfortable clothing, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

If you experience any of the following, be sure to call your doctor immediately:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Trouble breathing or excessive shortness of breath
  • Light-headedness or dizziness
  • Difficulty with balance
  • Nausea

By working up to a fuller workout you can avoid causing potential damage.

Studies have shown that a good exercise routine (including cardiovascular and strength training) can help improve many woes that an aging body may experience such as arthritis, heart disease, and other conditions.
