A growing outbreak of Pertussis (also commonly known as Whopping Cough) has many concerned in California. Presently there have been 1,500 cases reported this year, and the numbers aren’t dwindling.
The epidemic is being considered the worst in 50 years and the groups who are at most at risk are children, infants, the elderly, and pregnant women. Even if you have been immunized you can still get it, due to a large drop in what is called ‘herd immunity’ from many opting not to have their children immunized against Whopping Cough in fears of side effects. Among the groups recommended to receive a booster vaccine are the elderly and especially grandparents who care for young children.
The symptoms of Pertussis can be mistaken for a cold early on, but as the sickness lasts more severe signs and symptoms commonly appear. They come in stages, and it is during the second stage that many are diagnosed. While it may start with only a mild fever and cough, it gets worse as the disease does reach that second part:
- There are bursts (paroxysms) of coughing, or numerous rapid coughs, apparently due to difficulty expelling thick mucus from the airways in the lungs. Bursts of coughing increase in frequency during the first one to two weeks, remain constant for two to three weeks, and then gradually begin to decrease in frequency.
- At the end of the bursts of rapid coughs, a long inspiratory effort (breathing in) is usually accompanied by a characteristic high-pitched “whoop” sound.
- During an attack, the individual may become cyanotic (turn blue) from lack of oxygen.
- Children and young infants appear especially ill and distressed.
- Vomiting (referred to by doctors as post-tussive vomiting)

It is important to be seen by a doctor as soon as one can, due to Pertussis being easier to treat if caught early. As the disease progresses it becomes much harder to treat, and much harder for the body to deal with.
